the only thing i can think of is turn your magnet up full start casting and each cast turn the magnet back a little untill you can cast without backlash.
your reel spool is turn faster then the lines coming off which creates backlash.(been there done that)
the knob should be on the right hand side of your baitcaster.
hold your rod straight out (with your lure on it) press the buttom and let her drop to the ground, the lure should fall slow and steady.if not turn the magnt up and try again ,each time you turn it the lure should drop slower or not at all.
hope this helps ya out

Hey Muska....I was curious if you ever got proficient with that Black Max? I got the same one last spring and quickly became so irritated I returned it. Hope you fared better?!
It seemed like a good reel for the money but I had all the same problems you did.

Hey PH , Just to let you know a month or 2 ago i put some new line on it - Berky FireLine .. and had plenty of perfect cast with it .. i went thru 3 or 4 different kinds of line and its working great for the trip i had it out . Just make sure to limit the "backlash" to put your thumb down to stop the line or reel to stop it before it its water and will help also try it in the spring and let me know.. and ill keep u posted too !

i got the black max and love it. i have been using baitcasters for a while so it really didn't backlash much at all for me. it just takes practice, i can cast 1/4 oz lures a long way with it with no problem. all i can say is practice practice practice practice
and....................................................................more practice

hey just joining this topic and thought that i would give my 2 cents. I have been using abu reels for years and have pulled alot of big fish in with them. I have also had the last 2 reels brand new in the shop getting fixed after catching a couple of big musky. I had the worm gear go on one of them after catching a 30lb musky ( abu 6500c model) brand new reel. My other abu a low profile baitcaster blew as the fish was pulling drag . I never had that happen and i like abu but i have gone to shimmano and i have never had a problem. Still have my abu reels and will never get rid of them but not taking a chance especially for musky i will stick to shimmano for them. my 2 cents ....see ya on the water
